There are many famous redheads when you talk of the early age of stage and screen, for example; Rita Hayworth (who was not a natural redhead) Lucille Ball (who used to joke that she couldn't remember her natural hair color), Ginger Rogers and Katherine Hepburn. Did you know that Marilyn Monroe was actually born a redhead? Bette Davis, famous for her beautiful eyes and her role in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" was also a redhead.
From more recent times, names include the redheaded queen of the 80's, Molly Ringwald, the gorgeous Nicole Kidman. Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts and Lindsay Lohan also spring to mind. Perhaps not so well known, but our personal favourite is Isla Fisher, who starred in Wedding Crashers & is not only gorgeous, but very funny too!
Redheadday (Roodharigendag in Dutch) is the name of a Dutch summer festival that takes place each first weekend of September in the city of Breda, in the Netherlands. The two-day festival is a gathering of people with natural red hair, but is also focused on art related to the colour red. Activities during the festival are lectures, workshops and demonstrations which are aimed specifically at red-haired people. The festival attracts attendance from 30 countries and is free due to sponsorship of the local government.

Gingers are tough & intuitive!
Redheads have a mutated MC1R gene, which produces a mutated MC1R receptor, also known as the melanocortin-1 receptor. This mutation leads to the special hair colouration, the paler skin and freckles that we know and love - but scientists have recently found that it also leads to the ability to withstand much greater levels of pain than non gingers!
Plus In 2002 a scientific study found that gingers require twenty percent more anaesthesia than people with other hair colouration.
In studies of psychic ability, gingers were found to have 14% more intuition than the base measurement. |
